Fine jewellery designer Ron Hami dropped by Holts to showcase the re-launch of his first collection, Zodiac, to celebrate his 10 year anniversary.
On his signature style…
The esthetic is very clean lined, very minimal. I try to keep it simple, sexy and sophisticated. The collection has two main components to its DNA, the hand carving and the geometric shapes.
On the creative process…
We begin by carving the designs into wax. From there, you get these little shapes that create an architectural element. I then play with the scale and size and that’s what tells the story and determines the language of my designs.
On seeking inspiration…
I don’t believe in being inspired solely by travel. True creators for me open their senses to their surroundings and design from there— inspiration doesn’t have to just be while travelling.
On his celebrity following…
As this is my 10 year anniversary, there was a point in the 10 years that my collection was very celebrity driven. Now, I design as if my customers are all celebrities. The woman I design for is very fashion forward, she doesn’t imitate others, she has the confidence to know what she likes, what she wants and goes after it.
On keeping his collection fresh…
Unless I’m designing a completely new collection, I already have the style language there, and I build on that. Spring and fall of 2013 will be all about colour. Right now, I have 3 strong gemstone colours: green (Tsavorites), deep blue (Tanzanite) and Pink (Rubellite).
On his inaugural Zodiac collection…
My Father passed away at a very young age on a diamond buying trip. Clients continued to look for his line, Joseph Hami, and could no longer find it. Several years after he passed, I decided to launch a line in his honour. I created a clean lined collection and some of his clients became mine. I chose Zodiac symbols because to me they’re something everyone can connect to. Jamie Preston was my first Zodiac client. Nicole Kidman, Cameron Diaz, Carmen Electra, Eve, Lindsay Lohan all quickly followed. This is the collection we’re re-launching for our 10 year anniversary exclusively at Holt Renfrew.
On purchasing just one piece from the collection…
I love any of the hoop style earrings from the collection— those are my signature. It has hard and soft lines, hidden diamonds, and asymmetric lines. For me, my collection is surrounded around the earrings. I believe they’re the make-up of the face. It’s the first thing that catches your eye.
